Smart Ways to Beat the Summer Heat with Your Dog

The sunshine and fresh air are so tempting in the summer and nobody wants to be cooped up in the house, especially your dog! But, the summer heat can be uncomfortable and even dangerous. Here are some smart ways to beat the summer heat so you and your dog can enjoy the sunshine.

Plan to Head Outside During the Cooler Times of the Day

Even though it’s hot outside, you and pooch don’t have to spend the entire day outdoors. One of the smartest ways to beat the heat is to plan your outdoor fun for the early morning or late evening. Take an early morning walk before the sun gets too hot or head outside for a fun game of fetch after dinner. Either way, you and your pooch will enjoy the fresh air and exercise. Don’t forget to hydrate along the way!

Hit the Water

Head to the beach or the lake and hit the water. Throw a ball or frisbee at the water’s edge and your dog will be in heaven. No beach or lake nearby? No problem! Set up a kiddie pool in the backyard and give your dog his own place to cool off. For more adventurous pups, try a sprinkler that shoots water in the air. Some dogs even love being sprayed by the hose and will make a fun game out of it.

Make Some Frozen Treats

Help your pup cool off by making him so frozen treats. It doesn’t have to be complicated, either. You can simply cut up bite-sized chunks of chicken breast, bananas, or watermelon and pop them in the freezer. You can even buy doggie safe ice cream cups in the freezer section at your grocery store. Even better, head over to Starbucks for a Puppicino!

Invest in a Cooling Vest or Collar

A cooling vest or collar can be a lifesaver if you’re headed out for some fun on a hot day. You just soak them in water, wring them out, and then put it on your best buddy to keep him nice and cool during a long walk. In a pinch, you could just wet a bandana and put it in the freezer just until it’s good and cold. Your pooch will love his cool new gear on a hot day!

With a little planning and creativity, you and your dog can have plenty of safe outdoor fun this summer!
