Love does not have a dollar sign attached to it. Adopt a shelter dog who might very well be euthanized. Do you think that animal cares if you are poor? You just saved a life.

Please do go see a vet. The problem may not even be with his hips or joints. He could have a bladder infection so it is painful, which might explain why he is not drinking also. Any number of things might be wrong. I would get another opinion.

    Janice,

I am very sorry for your loss. I also had a shepherd mix who, at 10 years old, I lost to AIHA. I was a distraught as you are. It does pass in time. For me, I still think of him often.

I do not know if this will help you or not, but I did create a web site to honor my dog. Maybe reading his story will help or maybe it will inspire you to create a memorial for your lost friend. Please see the link below.

House train the dog and allow him inside when you are inside or not home. Secure the yard.

The only time I can recall a dog of mine throwing up yellow is when he’s been eating grass. I’m guessing this time of year in Alaska that is probably not the case. But, is the yellow bile? Could it not just be stomach acid?

ddmom is correct. The hardest part is keeping the knee protected after the surgery. Keeping an active dog still can be difficult. I did it twice with Ray, and there are some good tips at my site.

It sounds like your family should abandon your brother in law, not your dog. I hope you go get your dog.

It never ceases to amaze me the stories I hear about how animals are treated.

I’m guessing he was going to want to xray the area around his heart. If your dog has congestive heart failure, fluid will build up in the lungs and a cough will persist to try to clear the fluid. The blood results you describe do not indicate an advanced stage of heart problems though.

While I realize xray are expensive for you, they would be well worthwhile to diagnose his condition. If he does have heart problems, medication could be administered to help him.

Would your parents be able to help with the vet bill? Maybe they could spring for the xrays. You might also want to ask another vet the cost to xray. My dog was just xrayed for heart issues and it was a bit less than $200, plus the cost of the office visit.

Unfortunately, vets are not cheap. To properly diagnose your dog’s problem you do need to spend some money. Just be wise with the results you are seeing. The internet can be used to learn quite a bit about blood work, xray results, etc. Many vets post info online that can be obtained through searches on Google.

    Good luck.

My previous dog Ray tore both hind ACLs at different times in his life. I documented his second surgery on the web. Please visit the below linked web site for the details, photos, etc. And, please feel free to email me personally from the link there if you have any questions. I’d be happy to answer…

Did the blood work indicate any items out of normal range? If so, what were they? Blood results often will lead you in the proper direction, especially if a symptom exists. What were the other symptoms the vet was concerned about?

I’m very sorry for your loss. About 3 years ago I lost a dear friend Shepherd mix rather unexpectedly also, to AIHA.

I don’t know how to answer your question. I can say I felt a very real feeling that Ray was around after he passed. It was not constant, but when it appeared it was VERY real. It happened three distinct times over the first few weeks after his death. I think this was his way of saying "it is ok" to me.

I, of course, three years later still feel him in my heart. If your dog touched you so much as to ask this question I am sure you will feel her in your heart also.

Consider consulting your vet. Something as simple as a stool test might reveal a medical problem.
