Pauline- I think some of the best advice that I’ve heard here are – # 1 not allowing her to have run of the house #2 – apple spray #3 – praising her when she does do her business outside. I would add the following things to your routine: #4 – Dogs are creatures of habit, being consistent with the times that you take your dog outside is extremely important. Knowing that they will be taken out certain amount of times a day will give them confidence and security. # 5 – Until your dog is completely potty trained – she should NOT be unsupervised so that you can catch her in action and immediately show her the right place to relieve herself # 6 – in addition to praising her when she does her business outside – I would keep treats in my pocket and give her one reinforce her good behavior and #7 – While training her, keep it to a small patch of grass – do not take her for a long walk – only after she has relieved herself – she should be rewarded with a long walk. I hope this helps with the potty training. In regards to the snapping – can you give more specific examples so that we can better understand why he is doing this (i.e., is he eating at the time, does he have a favorite toy with him at the time, are you playing at the time, etc.) His snapping can be due to a myriad of reasons so it’s important to know what’s happening at the time to better understand his behavior. Is he neutered?

p.s. the husband said that if we were getting such a small dog, it would have to have to have a significant name. So he named her GODZILLA. LOL. Immediate reaction from everyone is laughter. We mostly call her "Zilla" which I think is pretty and unique. Her eyes are REALLY BIG. She tears a lot though because of it (trait of the Pekingese) so I have to constantly be wiping her face down with a warm wet cloth; otherwise, her face will stink like a wet rag!!!! Since she takes so much after the Pekingese breed I am patiently waiting to see if she is going to have the long, long hair. But I guess only time will tell. She is a July 2006 baby which makes her 8 months old so I guess she still has time to develop her adult coat.

auntsuse – thank you! I will let Godzilla know. She’s the newest member of my family and she is just a bratt! Can’t say know to that face, could you? She is my little mutt (1/2 Pekingese & 1/2 Poodle). She looks more like a Peke as you can see. Rescued her a couple of months ago. Here’s a closeup.

good point auntsuse. make sure that you do a 50/50 ratio of the old & new food. But don’t do it for a prolonged period of time because you can cause excesses and deficiencies in certain nutrients. This is only to be done for transitioning to the new diet (tops 5 days).

AMEN CS311!!! I too found some info on corn (see site listed below) and I think it’s bogus that corn has gotten such a bad wrap when it is such a good source of nutrients. People need to understand that allergic reactions are caused by a compromised immune system. A compromised immune system is caused by poor nutrition. Speaking of poor nutrition, I do not think IAMS is the best choice in food, not because of the corn… rather because of the amount of preservatives that go into creating this food. There are other foods that are much healthier for dogs and are very reasonable in price. Take a look into "Wellness", "Blue Buffalo" and "Merrick" these foods are all natural (no artificial coloring or preservatives) and they use only human grade ingredients.

Here are some quotes that I pulled from the website listed bellow. It’s worth reading.

"The fact is Human Grade #1 corn is one of the best natural sources of coat and skin conditioners like Omega 6, and it is low in gluten. It has an overall digestibility is 90% and carbohydrate digestibility is 99%."

"Before jumping on the bandwagon against corn used as a carbohydrate in a diet, you need to understand there is one cause for allergic reactions and that is a problem with an immune system. But there are many triggers for an "allergic type" reaction, some include: Genetic predisposition for Inhalant Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Vaccines reactions (Purdue Study- Vaccine Mediated Responses), Candida Albicans (see Systemic Yeast Infections), Flea bite or Insect bite Determatitis, Thyroid and/or Hormones and in rare cases, food allergies."

ooops sorry i should have specified. I use mixed veggies (can or frozen are fine) My dog seems to prefer the frozen ones, i think they are better anyway because they have no added salt. I use Green Giant Garden Medley which has corn, green beans and carrots. Sometimes I’ll buy a bag of sweet peas and mix it up with it because she loves her sweet peas. (no pun intended with your Stinkypea. LOL

She recommended 2 types of food for my dog (both which she uses for her dogs).

    Blue Buffalo – http://www.bluebuff.com
    Wellness – http://www.carealotpets.com/item-detail/?ItemID=69221B

personally i have my dog on Blue Buffalo because i can easily get it from petsmart. Wellness has to be ordered online and I was not too thrilled with the idea. I mix vegetables in with the dry food and a little warm water to make it like a stew consistency. (at this point you can add the dinovite.)

The thing about these foods is that they are all natural and only human grade ingredients are used.

    Hope this helps.

I think you missed my point. They all suffered horrible deaths. My uncle and dogs all died pretty much asphyxiated due to the smoking. Yes they did live long lives… But are we talking about quality of life or length… ?

My uncle was a chain smoker. He had emphysema and eventually it claimed his life at 84. Our 4 poodles were subject to his smoking and we had to put them down all the same year within 3 months of eachother. The vet said they had water in their lungs and that the humane thing to do was to put them out of their missery. 12 years of inhaling his second hand smoke did them in.

I am a smoker and I will go in the other room, close the door so the same thing does not end up happening to my dog.
