Get the eye checked out by a vet. Gunk in eyes can be caused by irritation, infection, illness, etc. If left to go on, there could be serious repercussions. Eyes are one thing I refuse to paly with and will get check out. Also, many animals will not show outward signs of illness until they are really sick and sometimes it may be too late by them to help.

My blue rat "Willow"’s eye keeps gunking up. She is about 8 months old or so. It is only her left eye that does this. The gunk looks like blood, but I have no reason to believe that it is. I am not sure if this situation is similar to a Persian cat’s (they have no tear ducts, so their eye constantly runs and gunks up). Other than that, Willow has no problems, except her new talent of jumping off the couch to run around the house 🙂
