My response is to leya. I have a 2 year old shih-tzu named Tiramisu ("Tira") who sometimes dashes out the front door or escapes through my side gate that does not always self-latch properly after I have finished gardening. She will go across the street and I am worried she will run away or get hit. I will try training her using your technique and also fix that self-latch! She has not mastered the "come" command outside yet and I shoud work on that too because she does not come when I call her, but just lays down where she is (Sometimes in the middle of the street! Luckily it is not a busy street).
One thing that helps is that she has several ID tags that jingle (my info, her license, AND her microchip info), so i can always hear where she is. i never let her outside unless I am there, so she never escapes for long before i hear her jingling outside the gate.

Dec 15, 2007 at 7:48 #453541I have a wolf hybrid I keep her in a fence and I never had a problem with her running off, but recently some dogs I’ve never seen before started coming around she’s even cleared the fence a couple fo times, only twice though.
I’m afraid she’ll start doing it more often especially because she could get stolen.Jun 28, 2009 at 8:57 #453542Hello. I’m Satomi 🙂

Email:info@aiqigifts.comSep 23, 2010 at 12:57 #453544According to the Whole Dog Journal, one reason dogs stay home has to do with how well a dog bonds with it’s owner.
In my experience, this kind of bond is a combination of positive owner-dog interaction, exercise, play, new experiences, praise, and positive attention. When a dog doesn’t feel the need to create his own adventures, he won’t go runabout.
A good example of this was my late Lab, Bonnie. After repeated escapes from the yard, she was left at the pound because her owner got tired of paying impound fines. I adopted Bonnie when she was six or seven years old and discovered I gotten a regular Houdini when it came to getting out of the yard. The first night at the house, she got out and was found nosing through someone’s garbage. The next day she escaped again by crawling under the house then reappeared at the front door three hours later. She ignored the recall command, didn’t know how to play, had never gone swimming, and had the leash skills of a bull on steroids.
Over time, and with help from my year old Golden Retriever, Bonnie learned the joy of playing with a ball, swimming, retrieving, walking on and off leash and coming when called. She never went to obedience class, but within a year she had a perfect recall, was a lady on a leash, and would willingly stay until released, no matter how long it took. Once she learned that home was a wonderful, loving, happy place, she never again went walkabout, even with the gate wide open.
Bonnie passed away when she was 14. Her companion, Teddy, is now 13 and has a proteg, a 2 year old Lab. There are plenty of places where the fence can be breached, and the gate is left open once in awhile, but neither dog feels it’s necessary to leave the yard, even when another dog comes by to say hello. I guess you’d say home is where the heart is.Oct 6, 2010 at 3:32 #453545I have a plott hound named Jato. She’s a year old and she has a habit of "buffaloing" me at the door. When she gets out she doesnt go far. Generally my 10yr old and the other neighborhood kids are right after her hollering her name. She runs around in circled and up and down the yards like a nut until someone can get close enough to catch her by the collar.
We take her on 3-4 walks a day and she goes to my mothers or mother in laws for fun in a fenced yard every day or two. I just dont understand it.
The reason its so concerning is we lost our Rhodesian Ridgeback, Archie, last november because he was hit by a car. Same thing had happened. I got buffaloed at the door. (Im a small woman) and he was off. We used to do the same for Archie as we do for Jato with walks and time at "grammas". I went out to search for him numerous times, as most of the time he would just come back on his own. I was devastated because it was my watch. Archie was 10yrs old and as long as Ive known him he’s always done this. His litter mates and his mother (not our dogs) were all runners, fence jumpers and hit by cars. My daughter is scared to death that Jato will meet the same fate and is VERY careful with the door, garage and such, but it still happens. I use the "SIT and STAY" commands, but it doesnt always work. I’d like some more suggestions besides grabbing the leash every time I open the door, which I believe would give her false expectations for walks are car rides. HELP!Nov 19, 2013 at 8:29 #453546Stop Your Dog From Running Away, Escaping, Roaming & Bolting Out The Door
Home
Does your dog escape from your yard, charge out the front door at any opportunity or simply not come back to you when off leash?
Frustrating isn’t it?
You are not alone. Dogs running away, roaming, chasing, escaping or not coming back when called are a very common problem for us dog lovers. Although this running away behavior satisfies many of your dog’s instincts and is a completely natural thing to do, it is also totally unacceptable and dangerous in today’s fast paced world.

Roaming or running away behavior can be a tricky problem to turn around. One of the biggest issues we face when addressing this problem is that each time our dogs get out and explore the world they actually get rewarded for doing so. They get to raid your neighbors rubbish bin, chase the cat from next door or hang out with some other dogs… you get the idea.
That’s why running away is often called a "self rewarding behavior". Basically what this means is that once a dog gets into the habit of running away / escaping (and getting rewarded for it) it can be a very difficult behavior to extinguish.
I’ve put together a 3 step plan that will hopefully put an end to your dog’s days of roaming the streets. As with most behavior problems it is preferable to prevent the problem from arising rather than trying to correct an established bad habit.
Here’s The 3 Step Plan To Help Stop Your Dog From Running Away:
Identify What Causes Your Dog To Run Away.
Ensure Your Dog Is Happy, Comfortable, Involved, Safe & Stimulated At Home.
Address The Specific Cause or Trigger.

1. Why Do Our Dogs Run Away?
Generally speaking you could say that dogs run away for one of two reasons. They take off in order to get to somewhere or something they want or to get away from something or someone they’re not comfortable with.
More specifically you can usually trace your dog’s running away behavior back to one or more of the following causes:
Boredom, roaming for a mate, loud noises (such as a thunderstorm or fireworks), separation anxiety, isolation, escaping from mistreatment, lack of obedience training, easy access to "freedom", predatory drive, following a tasty scent, eliciting play, other animals around, psychological problems or inadequate socialization. Plus you’ve probably got some more that should be added…
As you can see there are many reasons for a dog to run away – don’t take it personally.
