My mothers dog had a seizer the other day… it was her first one that we have witnessed. The father of her dog has epilepsy. we are going to have her tested… what is the average lifespan of a dog with epilepsy?

I have a 8.5 yo Rhodesian Ridgeback who cluster seizes. They started at 1 yo. He had as many as 26 in 24 hrs. TREATMENT. Cluster seizures present the risk of overheating and death. After 3, go to the vet. For our 100-lb dog, we administered 20 mg of liquid Valium, intravenous, per hr for as long as he showed signs of seizing. The IV would be in him for a day to a day and a half. We witnessed over 150 seizures in 4 yrs. However, he hasn’t clustered in 4 yrs because we feed him ONLY limited ingredient dog food (Royal Canin IVD, but there are others–the key is no gluten (wheat), corn, soy, or dairy), we administer 1.5 grains of phenobarbital 2 x /day, we administered potassium bromide 2 x/day, we never give him monthly heartworm med (we use dimmitrol daily; it has DEC, which Filarabits, which is no longer available, contains), we never vaccinate him, we never give him flea treatment (either comb them or use diatamaceous earth where he sleeps), and we never shampoo him. After a lot of money and still a lot of work, he is fine today. Runs w/ me and the other 2 ridgebacks 3-4 x/wk, altho he can’t sprint due to the pheno. Good luck.
