I purchased a four month old Bichon Frise who was returned to a friends pet store; she is beautiful. At the time, I did not have a 50 x 50 vinyl fence or doggie door. Having the luxury of being at home, it did not take me long to house break her. I would take her out 8 or 12 times a day until I caught on to her schedule; feeding her the same time each day. Within a week, during a storm, we let her sleep with us and she never messed in our bed. Our second Bichon, which I purchased as an 8 week old was even easier to train. I would never use crates or piddle pads. If you truly want a foolproof way to train a dog, get a doggie door which leads to a fenced in yard for them to run and play. I realize not everyone has this luxury. I would not have a dog in an apartment; its not fair to them to be crated. This is only my opinion; but I spoil my dogs, even cooking for them and giving them bottled water. I have a crib with one side lowered pulled up to my side of the bed for them to sleep.
