Wooden Works Tall Case Movement and Dial by Mark Leavenworth & Co.:
$325.00

This is a Mark Leavenworth & Co. Movement. Waterbury CT thirty-hour cord pull up plain movement. The two staggered upper plate pillars are screwed into the front plate and cut off flush, two auxiliary studs are screwed into the front plate to attach the dial and there is a large count wheel on the rear. This is what identifies it as a Mark Leavenworth & Co. movement. This company was in business from about 1814 to 1817.
Special notice should be made of the attachment of the hammer control pillar as it attached to the front plate using a wire, the front plate is narrower that usual. Also the gear that drives the count wheel is manufactured using pins instead of a more normal wooden leaf construction. Also of note the minute shaft is cut down by hand to fit past the main gear. All of this appears to be original construction and not later repair of modifications. Also the hammer has a different design that I have not seen before. To me it is possible that an apprentice made the clock or another Waterbury shop made this using Leavenworth design and/or Leavenworth factory manufactured parts.
Right now there are no noticeable repairs required to the movement parts. All gears run free on the time side and strike side. There is some wobble in the locking wheel and warning wheel which does not seems to affect operation. The wobble can be minimized by truing up the gears.
The face is plainer than usual and came with the works when I got it. It is a "flat leaf" painted wooden dial and I do not see any indication where it has been messed with at all. The upper stiffener fits the works perfectly and looks like a typical Waterbury (R Whiting) construction. The lower stiffener was broken off when I got it and has been re-glued. The dimensions of the dial are 113/4in. wide and 153/4in. tall. The height is a bit short but I have noticed that R Whiting dials (ie Waterbury) can be less that 16in. in height. I find the simplicity of the diall as very appealing almost "shaker" like.
That brings me to this sale. I usually like to sell these movements completely cleaned up, new bushings, polished pinions, re-strung, running with proper hands and a bell. But lately it seems that the only interest are for parts clocks. In that case this does need some work. If by some chance you would like a complete running clock for a wag-on-the-wall or to put in a case I can do all the required clean up, with hands (your choice)and an authentic reproduction bell, pendulum and bob and authentic reproduction weights. I can also supply original parts if you desire. I can assure you that the require extra cost will be minimal (my cost) since I do this for the love of these old clocks( no crap) not for profit or some desire to collect one of every kind clock made.
To be clear you are offerding on the movement and dial as shown in the pictures.
