The Singer model 99 is a portable version of larger Singer Sewing Machines that were commonplace at the time.

As referenced in the \"History of the Singer model 99K,\" in 1921, the Singer 99K became the world\'s first electric portable sewing machine. This particular machine comes in the highly desirable Domed \"Bentwood\" (polished plywood) cover, in which the earliest model 99s were mounted. This case is in good condition, but does show some signs of its age, which only adds to the machine\'s antique vintage charm.* Model: 99-13

* Machine Measures: 8 1/2\" Height x 11 3/4\" LengthDespite it\'s 3/4 size, this is a full-powered heavy-duty machine that can sew through leather and other very thick materials (with the right needle). This machine could be converted to a hand-crank machine.History of the Singer Model 99:In 1911, Singer introduced the 99K as a response to the growing demand for a lighter more portable domestic sewing machine that did not need to be used in a special table. The 99K was a ¾ size version of the established full size Model 66K. It used an identical mechanism and many of the same parts. The 99K stayed in production until 1962.
The Singer 99K was a sturdy and reliable machine that was easy to use. It became very popular with occasional home users because at 22 lbs., it was more manageable than \"full size\" machines, and it came in a storage case.
In 1921, Singer introduced the optional Singer electric motor, which made the 99K the first portable electric sewing machine.
The 99K will sew most fabrics from fine delicates to denim or leather and will easily handle any normal household sewing. The machines have adjustable tension and stitch length controls. The 99K must always be mounted in some form of base because the underbed mechanism prohibits the machine from sitting directly on a flat table surface.
Early Singer 99K\'s were sold in wooden bases with a small compartment under the balance wheel to store accessories and bobbins etc. At first, Singer 99Ks were sold in \"Bentwood\" (polished plywood) covers. Later models were still fitted in the same wooden bases, but these slid into a mock crocodile suitcase style case for transportation and storage. By the time Singer ended production on the 99K, the machine was mounted in a plastic base with a clip-on plastic lid or a soft plastic dust cover.
All versions of the Singer 99K produce a good straight stitch.
