VINTAGE PHILMORE CRYSTAL RADIO w/Earpiece + a bonus poly-variable Antenna Tuner ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆~This Philmore crystal radio is another example of a well-built, commonplace hobby radio that was sold in simpler times during the 1950\'s. This \'Old Timer\' may well bring back some youthful happy memories from the buyer\'s own hobby-building days of yesteryear---and may remember well that old advertising slogan for crystal radios that read something like \'no tubes, batteries, or electrical power.\'The seller has had this classic Philmore set in his collection for several years---it works reasonably well for the simple circuit that it is. It should be praiseworthily noted that the Catwhisker-and-Galena installation craftsmanship that exists under the enclosed (removable) plastic dome works So Very Well that this impressed seller left it in its place!!! In fact, just a tap on the dome tends to reset the coiled-spring catwhisker adjustment (so, as the old saying goes, \"If It\'s Not Broken, then Don\'t Fix It!\").Simplistic crystal radios such as this one often were inefficient in separating AM radio stations: Thus, distant signals usually were crowded-out due to frequency resistances that developed when accomodations were not made to tune the antenna circuit. The seller, after experimentation, thereby decided to add a small, modernistic poly-variable capacitor to serve as an Antenna Tuner. It is unattached, but positioned at the antenna\'s entry terminal for convenience---it\'s usage is optional (and easily can be detached by the user): It\'s presence, however, makes a remarkable contribution to the tuning Efficiency and Sensitivity of this \"inexpensive\" crystal radio---especially if the antenna is a lengthily one. A ceramic ear plug has been included which supposedly is more sensitive than the original crystal-element ear plugs (unlike the crystal-elements, however, the user will find that it is necessary to tap the backside of the modern units on a table-top, etc, to \"initialize\" the electron flow: Personally, the older ones sounded better, and performed louder--but none were available for the seller to install). By the way, in regard to receiving antennas, a standard outside long-length antenna and non-corrosive grounding attachment is a no-brainer necessity for this--and any other--crystal radio IF the user wishes to receive and procure AM signals outside their local reception distances. Hey, Have Fun With Your Leisurely Time.
