Very Rare Zapotec Navajo 4\' X 7\' Rug:
$388.00

For over 1000 years the Zapotec Indians of Oaxaca have been devoted to the art of weaving rugs. Today, they still practice the techniques of their ancestors.

These rug making methods call for a series of complex steps to ensure quality handmade original. First, the sheep are farm raised and their wool is sheared. The wool is then cleaned and pounded until soft enough to be spun into yarn. Using only natural dying agents, such as the cochineal beetle and the indigo plant, the yarn gains rich colors. On the foot pedal of the loom the artist weaves the prepared yarn. the rugs designs are inspired from traditional Zapotec motifs, such as the reliefs of the Milta and Monte Alban ruins. These unique rugs require months of dedication to complete. Each stage of the process is formed by hand.

In a small Oaxacan village, the Montano-Lopez family continues to employ traditional tapete (rug) methods. With the sale of each tapete (rug) the family is able to preserve their heritage while creating a sustainable economy in the modern world. These handcrafted originals are authentic works of art.
I bought this 14 years ago in Telluride, Colorado. It still has the original tag. The rug has never been on the floor or hung on a wall. It has been in storage for 14 years.

1 - 4\'x7\' - (small 1/2\" tear otherwise would be $800)
