Scarce Battle of Waterloo Medal to Royal Artillery Driver - Wounded in Action:
$1937.29

Selling medals from my own collection, to fund other medal purchases. Selling here (a little reluctantly) is quite a scarce Waterloo Medal to a man wounded at the battle on 18 June 1815. In terms of provenance, this is the medal that was sold by the reputable sale house Lockdales on 21 May 2006. A copy of the catalogue cover and sale lot description are included in the pictures above. So, this is an original Waterloo medal, correctly named to \'Samuel Bates Royal Artillery Drivers\', with the \'snow flakes\' present at each side of the naming. It has its original steel clip, with a replacement ring and a modern replacement ribbon. It was described by Lockdales as having \"edge bumps, but very fine for this medal\". Please have a look at the pictures because the edge bumps do affect the lettering of \'Royal\', the \'S\' of Bates and the \'Art\' of Artillery. His pension papers and copy of the Waterloo Medal and Prize Roll entries for Samuel Bates are available at the National Archives, Kew and copies will be sent to the winning buyer. His pension papers detail that he enlisted in October 1812 and was discharged in May 1817, on reduction of the Royal Artillery Drivers. They include a note that he was \"wounded in left side by splinters of a shell\" The prize roll, shows that he was paid Prize money of £4 11shillings and 4 pence. At Waterloo, Bates served in Captain G.H. Grimes \'D Troop\' of Royal Artillery Drivers. At the time of his enlistment, he is described as having been born in Salop and being a labourer, but in the period before his pension (at age 79 years and 6 months) he is described as having been an \'Engine Driver\'. Samuel Bates was not put forward for a Royal Hospital Chelsea Pension until, aged nearly 80, his application was submitted by the Reverend Roper of Holy Trinity, Smethwick who described him as lately an Engine Driver who was now \"worn out, unable to support himself any longer and suffering disability from his army service\".Selling with e-copies of the relevant pension papers, Waterloo medal roll and Waterloo prize roll (plus a copy of the 2006 Lockdales catalogue entry). The pictures do form part of the description, but please do not hesitate to ask any questions you might have. I have started the sale at a sensible low, with , simply to keep selling costs down. I would like to acknowledge help I have had from the British Medals Forum in compiling some of this research on Samuel Bates. This is a medal/man worthy of more research, which is something I am finding it hard to find the time to do.Listing a number of other medals and probably more to follow.Returns accepted only if the medal is found to be other than as described (in which case I would refund your return postage).International Postage is only via Royal Mail International Signed = peace of mind with signature on delivery.
