You are offerding on what is known as a Gohonzon Buddhist scroll used in worship in various Nichiren Buddhist Sects. All the Nichiren sects of this Buddhism venerate the founder 13th century priest known as Nichiren Daishonin (Nichiren Shonin in some sects).

They focus their prayers towards the scroll and chant the words Nam Myoho Renge Kyo (some sects say Namu followed by Myoho Renge Kyo).

This scrollis aversion of the Gohonzon known asTOKUBETSU (meaning SPECIAL)given toworshippers of theNichiren Shoshusect.These TOKUBETSUscrolls arelargerthan the smaller standardsized Gohonzon scrolls issued tothe believers.

If our research is correct, these types ofGohonzon\'s were produced in the 1960\'s and 1970\'sunder the tenure of 66th High Priest Nittatsu.

They were given to the Hokkeko and SGI (Soka Gakkai)Lay Member (SGI was connected with Nichiren Shoshu at that time, but presently is excommunicated from them)believers by the Head Temple of Nichiren Shoshu, Taisekiji near Mount Fuji. Our understanding is that only long time practicing members could receive these....................Making this offering we believe to be rare indeed.

Thescroll is darkenedas to be expected with age, but we think that makes this even the more special because of the usage. The Gohonzon scrollis in excellent condition as you can see! Characters are clear and legible, the scroll itself is intact and no tears or discernable wrinkles.

Also PLEASE note that due to age, at the top of the scroll, the silk paper has come apart at the seam from the top wooden roller on the left and right hand sides......it is a clean separation.....it is still intact and connected in the center (SEE SCAN). This can be repaired at any one of various shops that specialize in scroll repair at a minimal charge(you can google online under Chinese scroll repair, etc). WE WILL NEVER artificially alter our items!!!

Otherwise, this is a fantastic example of a gem beauty Tokubetsu as you can see in the scan.
