Summary: Americanfolk pottery centerpiece bowl, form number 34,
attributed to Charles “Charlie” Boyd Craven, made at the Royal
Crown Pottery, Merry Oaks, Chatham County, North Carolina,
1939-1942.Notes: The skillis immediately apparent. Charlie Craven was a
North Carolina potter who worked for nearly all of the prominent area
potteries including: Jugtown, Smithfield Pottery, Tobacco Road Pottery
(Partner), Teagues Pottery, Owens Pottery, and Charles Craven
Pottery (Owner).Description: Form 34 isa round symmetrical centerpiece bowl with
sloped sides and six pinched “pie crust” folds, separating the modestly
everted rim into six lobes, with two strap handles attached either-side,
and positioned into opposing divots. The result is anoutstanding organic
arts and crafts form covered in the iconic streaky green and brownrutile
glaze.Dimensions: 3⅞” high x 11 ⅞” wide at handlesMarkings: stampedon base with circular Royal Crown Pottery Handmade
backstamp; stamped on base with shape number 34Condition: ExcellentVintage Condition - no damage no repair. A couple
of glaze pops - these are not damage and are common and expected
with this type of glaze.PotteryHistory: Founded andoperated by Victor Obler, a Russian
immigrant, Royal Crown Pottery, employed many local potters, including
Jack Kiser and Charlie Craven, encouraging them to expand on the North
Carolina pottery tradition. Many of the local potters have beeninvolved in
the trade for generations and the forms and glazes developed and
evolved from pottery to pottery. Royal Crown is found in manycollections,
