In the wild they are found in both fresh and brackish water. Our specimens are acclimated to brackish water. It is peaceful towards most other species that are same size or bigger, but it is predatory and will eat fish that are small enough, especially bottom dwellers). It is highly territorial and aggressive towards others of its own species, so keeping more than one is not recommended. As with all territorial fish, rocky hiding places are a must.
