Everything has been tested on this receiver and itworks as designed by Japan Radio. I stand behind what I sell on and my response should reflect the quality of items you receive and the level of service you can expect from purchase to delivery.

This receiver is the Lamborghini of shortwave communications receivers. It can be easily used by a novice hobbyist, but to gain full advantage of the numerous features, you will need to be experienced with the many features found on this advanced receiver. Please note that I have set the selling price in accordance with demand, desirability, condition, and collectability.

The receiver comes with it\'s AC power cord, original user manual, full service manual in 3 ring binder, copy of the brochure, reviews of the receiver, copies of promotional material, and a CD containing a variety of documents. The CHE-199 optional board is not installed and this generally contributes several hundred dollars more to the cost, when available.

Some background:

In 1977, Japan Radio Co. had introduced it\'s first radio into the consumer market for shortwave enthusiasts. JRC had a long history of manufacturing commercial and military equipment and now began it\'s foray into a market dominated by the names such as Col*lins and Dra*ke. The initial introduction, the NRD*505, reportedly made less than 1,000 units and this receiver broke new ground for enthusiasts with it\'s high construction standards and precise digital readout. Cost of this receiver was over $2,200 which was a tidy sum of money in the 70s.

This receiver was followed by other highly acclaimed models such as the NRD*515 and NRD*525 and JRC showed it\'s inclination to listen to the market...building on it\'s successes and offering new features with each new model. Then in 1991, JRC introduced the NRD*535 model to a welcome marketplace. This model continued on the success of previous models and offered even more features for about the same price as the 515 and 525 models. However, accessories continued to mushroom with this model, and later in the production cycle, JRC introduced the NRD*535D version that incorporated several desired options packaged from the factory for an additional $400 and intended to save some money for inclined enthusiasts.

At this point, the folks at JRC had a challenge on their hands...how to improve and come out with a new version of this famous line of receivers when the 535D had such high marks across the spectrum of shortwave and utility sites. Well, JRC\'s answer came from introducing a revolutionary change in their receiver instead of merely adding a couple of features and improvements. So in 1998, they introduced the 545 unit that was loaded with true DSP (digital signal processing) features and audio recovery unlike anything to ever hit the consumer marketplace. Digital Signal Processing was introduced in the early 1980s as a way of \"hearing\" the signal through a lot of the noise that permeated the shortwave bands. Since that time, use of microchips and computer technology has served to further enhance DSP in many other aspects of using receiver\'s circuitry to aid in the \"recovery\" of otherwise lost signals amidst the muck of noise. Here is a list of the DSP features on the 545:

DSP FUNCTIONS

DSP All-Mode Detection
DSP signal detection in all modes including LSB, USB, CW, RTTY, FM, AM and ECSS.

DSP IF Filter
Superior selectivity is achieved by a simultaneous Chebyshev type digital IF filter with an infinite impulse response configuration. The pass bandwidth is continuously adjustable from 10 Hz to 9.9 kHz in 10 Hz steps (BWC). This allows the user to get maximum fidelity out of the receiver and still avoid side channel interference from other stations as they have the option to select from the array of 998 bandwidths!

DSP Pass-Band Shift (PBS)
Radio interference is pushed out of the band by shift the center frequency of the digital IF filter upward or downward in the variable range of ±2.3 kHz (in 50 Hz steps). This allows the user to effectively move to the side of the signal that offers the least interference, if necessary. It can be combined with the IF filter for remarkable results in avoiding interference.

DSP Noise Reduction (NR)
Signal processing is adjustable in 256 steps, allowing the most audible conditions to be set. The NR function is effective for such noise that the noise blanker cannot handle. Like the one / two punch....you turn on the noise blanker and then whatever remains is cleaned up with the DSP noise reduction.

DSP Beat Canceller (BC)
Periodic signals such as beat sounds (hets) can be exalted and cancelled. This troubling noise can be plucked out of the signal like a rifle taking careful aim during target practice.

DSP Noise Blanker (NB)
NB-1 (narrow blanking width) and NB-2 (wide blanking width) can be switched over and the NB detection level is adjustable. Not all noise is created equal and, again using the example of a gun, NB-1 would be your rifle and NB-2 your shotgun. Both have a place in cleaning up a signal and can be used individually or jointly.

DSP Notch Filter (NOTCH)
Beat sounds are attenuated (>40dB) using the steep attenuation characteristic of the notch filter. Despite its steep characteristics, beat sounds are digitally processed and attenuated when the NOTCH is reset. It is adjustable within ±2.5 kHz (in 10 Hz steps). The notch follows in the range of ±10 kHz even when the tuning dial is rotated. The 545 is remarkable here, as the notch tracks the offending signal as you tune slightly up or down without having to readjust the notch with each little retune.

DSP Automatic Gain Control (AGC)
Digital AGC is applied to all modes (except WFM). The AGC is continuously adjustable between 0.04 and 5.1 seconds in 20 msec. steps in all modes except FM, AM and AMS. How many times have you heard that the AGC is too fast (aggressive) or too slow. Now you can set it within a wide range of options for best signal stability.

DSP Beat Frequency Oscillator (BFO)
The BFO generates signals in the LSB, USB, CW and RTTY modes.

DSP RF Gain (RF)
The information transferred to the RF GAIN control via the A/D converter is entered into the DSP to adjust gain inside the DSP and the gain of the primary IF amplifier.

DSP Squelch (SQ)
The Squelch function is available in all modes.

DSP Tone Control (TONE)
The audio quality may be adjusted in all modes (except RTTY & WFM) in the range of 1 to 10 kHz.

DSP S-Meter
The signal level is determined in reference to the input signal to the DSP and the level is converted into an antenna input level, which activates the S-meter.

At this point, you can see how the NRD-545 is unlike any other consumer grade receiver out there. Is it successful with all these DSP functions? Well, that will always be up for debate as some advocates love DSP while others are ambivalent about it. But the fact is that the Univ. Radio site refers to it as \"the most sophisticated radio ever developed for the hobby market\" and the panel of reviewers at Passport To World Band Radio have given it a 4.5 out of 5 rating using it\'s ever popular star system of ratings.

Here are some other features about this receiver that make it a standout:

Superior build and ergonomics. You can see virtually all the operational control adjustments on the large, multi-colored dial. My wife who cleans all of the equipment listed here on claims that it has the \"prettiest display\". Whether you agree or not, one thing is not subjective and that is that the NRD-545 has is nicest and most informative display that I have used on any receiver. (Please note that the display is correct and does not typically show all the characters as seen from the picture taken with my digital camera)

1,000 memories that store a number of features including frequency, bandwidth, AGC, mode, ATT, and step.

AM Synchronous Detection (ECSS) that prevents distortion from fading signals.

RS-232 port to allow for full computer control of this receiver. There are a number of control programs available for this purpose. Also, this receiver can be controlled remotely via the internet and this port can offer a remote control system to be operated even if you are sitting just across the room.

Scanning features allow you to move across the band locating new broadcast sites.

Dial lock and dial torque. If you prefer more or less \"road feel\", you can see the torque dial to suit your preference.

Dial dimmer adjustments for different viewing environments.

Operates on a variety of power sources like AC 100 / 120 / 220 or DC at 13.8 volts enabling it to be used in most countries, during field day, or for emergency operations.

Clock and timer functions to allow precise contact and record functions.

Triple conversion

Tuning steps: 1, 10, 100 Hz, 1, 5, 6.25, 9, 10, 12.5, 20, 25, 30 and 100 kHz

At this point, it is worth mentioning that the NRD-545 was discontinued by Japan Radio Co in early 2007 after a run of about 10 years. It seems that Japan Radio has vacated the market of desktop receivers like others before them as D*rake, K*enwood, and Y*aesu. The only way to purchase this interesting receiver is via the used market and these 545 receivers were not sold in large quantities and are not often seen in the market. Since being discontinued, the receiver\'s price has been moving upward since it has joined the ranks of no longer available, highly desireable, and very collectible receivers.
