-- -- -- --

James Joseph Brindley (1783-1858) wasone of three children born to American canal engineer James Brindley (1745-1820)and Elizabeth Ogle, the only son with sisters Sarah and Susannah.James Joseph married Hannah Baker and they would be the parents ofdaughters Elizabeth, Rebecca and Sallie, and Civil War hero, Richard Brindley.

James Joseph's father, James, was the nephew and studentof the famous English canal builder of the same name: James Brindley(1716-1772) known as the "Fatherof the English Canal." The Brindley familycame to America in 1774 and settled in Wilmington, Delaware.

The Brindley family were affluent members of the Wilmington,Delaware community, friends with GeorgeWashington, Benjamin Latrobe, E. I. du Pont, andother historical Americans. Although he initially lived on his farm in Maryland,James Joseph moved back to Wilmington,Delaware after his famous father's death and wasnow the "master" of the Brindley plantation. They raised all sortsof produce (and probably hemp), had horses, pigs, cows and other animals, and had a small group of slaves on the compound.

James Joseph Brindley died in 1858,just four years before his only son Richarddied while leading a charge against Confederateforces at the Battle of Gaines' Mill in Virginia.

Richard Brindley (1831-1862) wasthe only son, and last of four children born to James Joseph Brindley(1783-1858), and Hannah Baker (1798-1872). He had three oldersisters: Elizabeth, Rebecca and Sallie. You can view the BrindleyFamily Tree in my graphics.

Richard's grandfather was American canal engineer JamesBrindley (1745-1820), the nephew of celebrated English canal builderJames Brindley (1716-1772). Grandpa Brindley immigrated to the UnitedStates in 1774 and settled in Wilmington, Delaware where he marriedElizabeth Williams and spent the rest of his life.

Young Richard grewup on the family plantation in Wilmington, workingon the farm and attending school. He was a regular church-goer, volunteeredto work as a clerk in the 1851 elections, and sang in the churchchoir. By all accounts, he was an educated and hard-working man of highmorals and integrity.

Never married, he enlisted in the Union Army in 1861and rose up through the ranks to become a captain. He died a martyr's death on June 27, 1862, when he rallied his scattered troops and led a charge duringthe Battle of Gaine's Hill in Virginia, which resulted in his death.
