Antique Art Nouveau French Bronze Jewelry Box with Painted Pug Dog Portrait:

This charming antique art nouveau bronze box features a hand painted pug dog portrait on the top. The bronze jewelry casket has a lovely nouveau foliate design with a shell or coquille design featured prominently under the dog\'s portrait. The trinket box is raised on four cabriolet-styled legs, giving the whole box a feminine feeling, which is such a nice contrast to the dark patina of the bronze. The pug portrait is more Victorian in feeling as she has a collar with bells. The pug is a fawn color with black mask and clearly the \"older style\" pug with a slightly longer muzzle and yellow eyes. She has such a winsome look, almost like she\'s just done something she knows her owner will not be happy with.
The box was made in France. It is marked \"depose\" on the bottom which is a form of registration mark used on French bronzes from the 1920\'s/1930\'s. There are no other markings found.
The box is about 3.5\" wide x 3\" long x a little over 3.5\" tall, giving it a square appearance, also a nice solid contrast to the feminine decorations in the bronze. This little box is quite heavy for its size, at nearly 2 pounds. It is in very good antique condition and the coppery-brown patina is intact. There is a grayish color on the inside of the bottom piece, as shown in the photos.
This would be a lovely gift for someone who loves pugs, someone who loves the feminine style of the Art Nouveau period, someone who loves trinket boxes, someone who collects French antiques. It would make a wonderful addition to the night stand in the toile guest bedroom or even on the counter in the marble tiled powder room.
