Marimo Moss Ball Care Sheet - Not suitable for salt water tanks

Marimo literally means \"ball seaweed\" and is a rare species ofvelvety green algae that is naturally rounded by the gentle currents of the freshwater lakes they grow in. They are found in Lake Akan Hokkaido, Japan, Australia, Iceland, Scotland and Estonia. The oldest known cultivated Marimo is estimated at 100 yrs and the diameter of a basketball. It is considered \'Good Luck\' and \'Everlasting Love\' in Japan.

Common Names: Marimo Moss Ball, Lake Ball, Japanese Moss Ball (Aegagropila linnaei formerly Cladophora aegagropila)

Care Level: Very Easy(Beginner Friendly).

Placement: Foreground and floating
Planting: Left free floating, when it sinks just place them in the foreground. Can also be spread out like a carpet.
Flowers: None.
Propagation: Splitting. They will eventually naturally produce off growths with may be removed and routinely rolled to form separate balls.
Growth Rate: Very slow, about 5mm per year. It can eventually reach a diameter of 30cm (12\") or more but will take 100 plus years. It is said they can live to 200 years! Many Marimos are passed down through generations.
True Aquatic: Yes.
Water: pH: 6.5 - 7.5. Ordinary tap water at room temperature is fine. Change water about every 2-3 weeks. Rinse ball well, squeeze gently to remove water and roll in palm of hand to keep round shape.
Supplements: Does not necessarily need feeding but whatever fertilizer you use for your plants is fine. Tiny pinch only.
Lighting: Photosynthesis will occur under lamplight, lowlight, indirect sunlight (remove if air temperature is above 80 deg). Do not place in direct sunlight or it will begin to brown.
Recommended Tank Size: Can be kept in any small or large clear or opaque container (vase, aquarium, bowl, etc). Does not require air so a lid is ok.
Tips: If an area turns grey, flip it over and make sure the grey area gets light. If that doesn\'t work, soak in a bowl of water and small amount of salt for about 3 hours. The grey can also be carefully removed with tweezers. White/light spots indicate light levels too high. Brown spots can be carefully cut out. Do not place container in a very warm room.

Note: If your fish are nibbling at the moss ball, if is only trying to eat any food that has been trapped. No harm to fish or snails. Not for turtle tanks as they will destroy it. Will not encourage algae to grow in containers.

Great as Novelty Gift! Just squeeze out excess water but leave slightly moist, place in ziplock bag and wrap. Mossballs will live up to 30 days in a ziplock bag!
