Iams & Eukanuba Dry Food Recall Expanded

The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) has expanded it's voluntary pet food recall to include more brands.

Following last week’s announcement that specific lots of Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal dry cat food could be contaminated with salmonella, P&G has expanded it’s product recall to include Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas, Eukanuba Naturally Wild, Eukanuba Pure and Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin branded dry food. An FDA analysis has identified a positive result for salmonella in some lots of Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal dry cat food, and the other products have been recalled because they are all manufactured in the same specialized facility.

The product recall applies to all sizes, varieties and UPC Codes of the affected products with "Best Buy" dates between 1st July 2010 and 1st December 2010. The affected products could have been purchased via prescription through veterinary clinics, or at specialty pet retailers anywhere in the United States or Canada. P&G has stated that no canned food, biscuits, treats or supplements are affected by this announcement.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in cats, and, if there is cross-contamination caused by handling of the dry food, in people as well. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals of humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms you should contact your veterinarian.

No reports of animals or humans becoming ill as a result of coming into contact with these products have been received by the company, and the actions being taken are as a precaution. Customers who have bought any of these products are advised to discontinue use and dispose of it. Customer can contact Proctor & Gamble at 877-894-4458 with any questions they may have or to request a refund.
