I brush my dogs teeth if they will allow it. Otherwise, we buy them different things to chew on, such as hooves and beef bones. I won’t give my dogs rawhide treats though, because I was told by a vet long ago that these things don’t digest properly and could cause serious problems in the long run. They also have rope toys and such that they tug on and chew, so as far as "flossing" goes, I guess that takes care of that. Our dogs teeth are in good shape. 🙂

The reason why dogs sometimes have bad breath, is because the food they normally are given are "man-made". In nature, a wild dog would primarily eat meat and bits of grass or scraps of things, with their teeth for the most part maintaining good condition. Many of us give them "human man-made food" like foods humans aren’t suppose to even eat, which affects the dogs’ digestive system, and can accumilate plaque on their teeth. We as dog owners really should moniter our dogs diet. Giving them dry dog food mixed with fresh cooked pieces of chicken or fish, in the amount according to their size and breed, will give them variety, proper digestion and healthy teeth & gums. Causes of bad breath are the same in animals as in humans. If we limit the types of food we feed our dogs (never give dogs chocolate, cheese or milk), the dog will actually feel better, having more energy, and smelling better. : )

Proper dental hygiene is important for dogs.
We brush our dog’s teeth weekly with toothpaste and a finger brush.
In addition to helping them keep their teeth as long as possible, it also helps with bad breath.
As others have stated, chews and hard food also help with dental hygiene and diet does impact their dental health. No hard food or chews generally spells rotting teeth.
When I was a child we didn’t do this because 1. the vet didn’t tell us to and 2. I do not believe dog dental supplies were available back then.
Since they are readily available now, as someone else stated, if your dog will tolerate this what harm is there in cleaning their teeth?
Aside from the fact that you might actually be helping the dog retain his teeth and have healthier gums, you are at the very least getting the junk out of there.
Let’s face it, we all know dogs get their mouths on things that are not food, most notably poop and pee, and those things impact their breath and teeth.
Humans were once ‘in the wild’ too but now we’re not and we clean our own teeth. Why not extend the courtesy to our domestic animals?
Our current dog actually likes it. When it’s time he just comes right up to the cleaner and opens wide!
He has not needed a dental yet and he’s five. I think it’s because we’ve been diligent about cleaning his teeth ourselves, so there is the added benefit of postponing a dental for your dog, which of course costs money and is often unpleasant for the dog.
It just seems to me that at the very least this is harmless and in fact there are some solid benefits from this.

Where to begin
Number one, this should be fun for you and your dog. Be upbeat and take things slowly. Do not overly restrain your dog. Keep sessions short and positive. Be sure to praise your dog throughout the process. Give yourself a pat on the back, too! You are doing a great thing for your dog!

First, have your dog get used to the taste of the toothpaste. Pet toothpastes have a poultry, malt, or other flavor so your dog will like the taste. Get your dog used to the flavor and consistency of the toothpaste. Let your dog lick some off your finger. Praise your dog when he licks the paste and give a reward (really tasty treat). If your dog does not like the taste of the toothpaste, you may need to try a different kind. Continue this step for a few days or until your dog looks forward to licking the paste.

The next step is to have your dog become comfortable with having something placed against his teeth and gums. Apply a small amount of paste to your finger and gently rub it on one of the large canine teeth in the front of the mouth. These are the easiest teeth for you to get at and will give you some easier practice. Be sure to praise your dog and give a tasty treat or other special reward (e.g., playing ball).

After your dog is used to the toothpaste, and having something applied to his teeth, get him used to the toothbrush or dental sponge you will be using routinely. We need to get your dog used to the consistency of these items, especially the bristles on a brush. So, let your dog lick the toothpaste off of the brush so he gets used to the texture. Again, praise your dog when he licks the paste and give a really great treat or other reward . Continue this step for about a week, making sure your dog readily licks the paste off of the brush.
Brushing your dog’s teeth
Now your dog is used to the toothbrush and toothpaste and having something in his mouth. So the next step is to start brushing. Talk to your dog in a happy voice during the process and praise your dog at the end. Lift the upper lip gently and place the brush at a 45º angle to the gumline. Gently move the brush back and forth. At first, you may just want to brush one or both upper canine teeth. You do not need to brush the inside surface of the teeth (the side towards the tongue). The movement of the tongue over the inside surfaces keeps them relatively free of plaque. Be sure to praise your dog, end on a good note and give a tasty treat or other great reward.

When your dog accepts having several teeth brushed, slowly increase the number of teeth you are brushing. Again, by making it appear to be a game, you both will have fun doing it
