I have a dog who is a 3 year old lab/spaniel mix. Just this week he started getting scared over just about anything outside.

First it was the dumpster outside our apartment complex. Normally he tries to drag me over there (in hopes of finding a discarded bone or other food), but one day this week he seemed to have gotten spooked by it. I thought he must have seen something that I didn\’t, and I didn\’t worry too much about it.

But it seems to have gotten worse throughout the week. He then got scared of a large moving trailor, then street signs, lamp posts, and even people. He crouches down and his tail goes down and if he gets really scared he just sits down and pulls back wards away from things.

One day I brought in back in from a walk (more or less he seems a lot better inside than out) but he followed me in every room I went to and sat down and looked at the door to see if anyone or anything was going to come in behind us. Now he even seems to be getting scared of things inside the apartment. Like this morning he got really timid walking by an open closet door.

The only other thing I think is worth noting is that his appetite has dropped in the last month. I feel as if sometimes I almost have to force him to eat (by putting gravay or other items in his food) because he will go days without eating. (He still likes eating his treats though.) I tried switching his food thinking maybe he didn\’t like it, but it didn\’t make a difference. Overall his weight still looks good, despite not eating.

Anyway, I plan on calling the vet, but I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this sudden paranoia. Thanks in advance

You need to get him to the vet asap. Any time a dog is off its feed, there is cause for concern. He may be suffering from a nurological problem from the symptoms you describe.

Just in case anyone else comes across this problem with there dog getting paranoid or ‘spooked’, the vet said he had some kind of inner ear infection. Probably the getting spooked was because he had a loss of equilibrium and/or couldn’t hear what was happening around him, and maybe was just reacting to movements. The vet gave me something to clean his ears out, I will keep you posted if it doesn’t help. Also, the food issue is just him not liking the kind he has right now. The vet suggested putting a bit of olive oil in his food to make it more interesting to him instead of the gravy that you can buy for your dog.

glad its nothing worse than that. Guess I had the right church, wrong pue! You can also try some garlic powder (not salt) in his food.

Hi, so i have noticed a similar problem with my 3 and a half year old shih tzu bichon. He’ll run to a spot in the house and lay down then get up like he heard something in the other room that grabbed his attention and lay down in a new spot in that room. I was just curious, did the medicine the vet gave helped? And if so, do you remember the name of the medicine. If you can’t remember it’s fine (as i see the date of your post was about 7 years ago haha), but anything you know that might help would be great! 🙂 Hope your dog got through it alright!

My case is Similar ,I have a mixed breed German shepard I had him since he was 6-15 weeks old and its been over two years I’ve had him he’s a lovable and understanding dog,and its almost a month he have been acting so weird ,its like he would be so happy to see me ,then when i call him he runs over to me,then when he’s like a meter away from me he holds down his head looking at the ground and tail between legs and he would just barely takes his time walk up to me,just walking to me with fear,and I’m just so worried when i see him like that,and i and thinking If its because he didnt had company when he was young and becomes antisocial ,He’s not always like this ,and i just dont know what to do :'(
