I have a 17 yr old female cat, Calie. I love her to pieces. She is treated by her vet for arthritis. But for awhile now she’s been showing many signs of becoming senile. She’s cries all hours, if she is unaware that someone is around. She can walk away from her food, and forget that she was just eating. To then puke, to get your attention that she is hungry to go back to eating again! She most recently is urinating just outside her litter pan. I just can’t tell anymore if she’s in pain, or oblivious to everything going on. What do I do?! I can’t find it in my heart to put her to sleep, if her vets says that?!
I also have an elderly cat I suspect has developed feline dementia displaying a lot of the behaviours you describe. I can only tell you I’ve had to try and be patient with her – especially as she’s become very demanding and peeing everywhere but her tray (I had a post asking for suggestions myself). I’ve just had to try and accomadate her by putting down more trays and trying to discourage her from other places. The vet may find another reason for your cats problems though and have a better solution for you. I doubt very much she’s in pain but keep an eye out for depression. If and when you have to decide on euthanasia please think of your animal before yourself, it’s hard (I’ve lost my fair share) but part of your responsability. It will come to it one day. Good luck.
Thanks for the reply. The last few days the crying has been at all times of day. And now with an even more "blank" stare. I have always thought of her first, she’s been my baby all these years.. very difficult decision.

My cat’s a black version of yours, my problem’s the one before yours and I still haven’t really gotten anywhere!:D I can only recommend ear plugs and a sense of humour and if you get any good advice or suggestions that work let me know!!:) My cat was recently diagnosed with athsma as well, I thought she had heart failure or pnumonia. It’s all part of learning!!:D
I wish it were that easy. She wakes us up at all hours, and pukes all the time! I’n seriously considering putting her to sleep. I just don’t want to feel guilty about it. Because I truly see her suffering everyday, she hasn’t been herself for awhile. But she’s still very loving, but oblivious to her surroundings?! 🙁
You know her best,it’ll never be easy, I’ve thought about it myself with mine, it’s not that time yet for her but it won’t be long before i’ll call it a day.
I’ve always felt guilty putting animals to sleep – even when they’ve been dying!! I think it’s because you’ve made that decision to end their life and it feels like a betrayal. you’ll know when it’s that time.
All the bestThe time has come :'( I have to do this, she has no idea what is going on around her. At this point her vet said that I have to realize she has no qualty of life. I made an appointment for Friday, its going to be a very very sad day for me. But I have to make this decision thinking of her, not me. As much as I will deeply and dearly miss her, she’s not herself anymore. I had 18 wonderful years with my loyal little lovebug. 🙁

have your cat tested for hyperthyroid. The behavior you describe sounds very much like my cat’s when she was ill. We had her tested and then had her treated with a radiation injection. That was two years ago. she is back to her old self and has good quality of life. She is 17 years old. The treatment is benign but expensive.
My cat Calies’ kidneys were failing. I had to put her to sleep in February. I had 18 wonderful years with her, and miss her everyday 🙁
I suggest you to go on a professional vets cause you cat seem really old and this cat really has a problem just like i seen a a veterinarian in Finland at http://www.jar-vet.fi/ where i seen a same problem which cause of being old of the pet.
