The Shetland Pony is probably the oldest breed in the UK, named after the inhospitable Shetland islands in the North of Scotland. For many centuries the Shetland Pony lived in the open, protected only by this thick hair and sturdy disposition.

Origins: Although its exact origins are unclear, the Shetland Pony inhabits the Shetland Islands off Northern Scotland. Shetland Ponies were used as pit ponies and also used for pulling carts of peat and seaweed. The first written record of the Shetland Pony was in 1603, and it later became the first pony to have its own breed society with the Shetland Pony Stud Book Society being formed in 1890
