Not all dogs are ideal to have around young or even older children. Some breeds such as the Labrador Retriever are ideal for all ages, while other are less suitable.

This guide also takes into account how much individual breeds like to play with children, and is not necessarily just a guide to safety. For example, while a dog may pose no specific danger to a child, it may score a 'Poor' rating because the breed in general poses a slightly larger risk relative to other breeds; or simply because it is generally not 'as fun' for children.
