Labradors are the most intelligent dogs I know. Sometimes when my dog looks in my eyes I know that he is not just an animal.

Labs are very loyal and loving. They crave love and attention. They love to fetch. Our dog Leo would play fetch all day if we let him. They are excellent with children- gentle and protective. When our Lab was a puppy, however, he was naughty. He would eat or chew just about anything. But now he is perfect!

When it comes to children, you can't go wrong with a Lab but you'll probably want a show-bred lab for young children. While all labs are wonderful, my experience has been that those bred for show (double-coat) are MUCH calmer than those bred for field (single-coat). I've found that field-bred labs can be very destructive if not given lots of exercise -- not so for show-bred labs

Labradors do need a great deal of exercise, but my Labrador Tilly Beany can be run joyously to a frazzle in about 20 minutes with a cricket bat and tennis ball. By then, the only thing moving is a waving plume of a tail and a wide grin...

I'm responding to the comments of Ryan Sweeney. I think it is wrong to make such broad generalizations. I have a chocolate lab and she is anything but mischievous. She is loving and obedient. As for black labs in my experience they are wonderful and great with kids but no more obedient than other labs. As for yellow labs overeating most dogs will overeat if you let them!
