Opinions - Great Pyrenees Dog Breed

I own a Great Pyrnees "puppy". I put puppy in quotes cause he's the size of a full grown shephard even though he's only 9 months old.
   
He is the light of my life. He does like to run though and if he gets loose,he's like a horse with the bit in his teeth. He will run until he tires or until I go to the car and start it up. :) lol. He LOVES to ride in the car and will even return home from an unplanned run to go for a ride.
   
He is very affectionate though he does bark quite a bit and at all the wrong things. :) He will let anyone through the front door but won't let anyone but those who live in the house through the back door and heaven help any of his "pack" if they go OUT the front door...he becomes a nervous wreck until they return and/or go out the back door.
   
He hates change! He likes things to be the way they always are. :)
   
He also thinks he knows what's best a lot of the time and can be very stubborn when told differently. But all in all he is a very good dog even though he takes a lot of work and effort. :)
   
I couldn't imagine my life without my BaBaToePay! :)

I have 2 Pyrs, one male and one female both just turned 1 yr. old. I also have 2 other mix breeds, both males. They all play and get along great. When I take them on walks and see other dogs we have no problems. The female is shy so it takes her awhile to warm up, but we have an invisible fence so other dogs have came into our yard to play and they just love it! They are great dogs and would recommend them to anyone. Ours our inside dogs, so I clean ALOT but the love we get from them makes it all worth it!

I dog sit for my sisters 2 labs and have gotten to know and love a neighbors Pyrenean mountain dog she gets along so well with the 2 large dogs. I don't know why anyone would say this breed may not get on well with other dogs in general. This one sits and waits for us to pick her up every day for our "playdate" she is just a big marshmallow! Even one of the labs is sometimes unpredictable with temperament but the worst this one has ever done is jumped up to give you a big wet kiss! I couldn't love her any more if she were my own just such a lovable bundle of fur!

I have a Pyrenees, he is 5 years old now, he is the best dog I have ever had. He is great with kids they lay on him and hug him. I also have a small cockapoo he loves her he gets along with all dogs my sister has one too and never had a problem with other dogs. My dogs name is moose which is fitting he is huge, they do require a lot of grooming and you have to be prepared to have hair everywhere and room for them but they are gentle giants

We got our Pyr from an animal shelter and she's almost 4 years old. She's big, at 135 lbs, and has a very mellow temperament. Like other Pyrs she barks a lot and we have trained her to bark less. She is kept indoors at night, otherwise she will bark all night and disturb the neighbors. We take her out for daily walks, which she loves. She is an indoor dog and was housebroken with crate training. She has been clicker-trained to sit, come when called, and lay down. Her greatest asset is her love for children and babies. She enjoys their hugs, petting , and getting brushed. She is shy with some adults but attracted to others and we are unable to predict who she'll like. She gets along with other dogs at dog parks except aggressive types; then she'll run off rather than fight them. Her coat sheds dirt easily, once dry, with brushing, and rarely needs a bath. Her coat does mat easily on the backs of the rear legs. There's loose Pyr hair all over the house and on our clothing but we don't worry about keeping a perfect immaculate home. She loves cold weather well below zero but has also lived in hot climates where we were careful to walk her early in the morning or late at night. We are not very athletic and our Pyr isn't either so she's a perfect fit for us. She loves riding in our station wagon. Air travel isn't easy because she needs the x-large airline crate and a dolly to move it. I've recently seen ads featuring airline crates with built-in wheels and we will certainly get one of those ! She needed training to get along with our new cat and we were greatly helped by a very good and patient dog behaviorist. She loves latex squeak toys and giant fake fur braided "snakes". She loves puppies but here in Alaska she does not tolerate sled dogs as they mush by; she tries to chase them while barking ferociously. We've been very happy with our Pyr and hope this info will help people make an informed decision about getting a Great Pyrenees dog. We have met other Pyr owners (some are breeders) and they have all been very helpful re questions and problems. The website of the Great Pyrenees Club of America can steer potential owners in the right direction.
