We have a 18 month old female golden. She is our first purebred. She is a character. When anyone comes she grabs the nearest toy and starts jumping, crying and wagging from nose to tail. This can be a bit annoying at times. Very smart. We raised chicks and turkeys this year and she thinks they are her babies. She packed the chicks around if they got out and washed them thoroughly. The turkeys, she would try to get them to play ball/ Needless to say they are all grown but remain hers.

I grew up with a black lab-golden retriever mix and she was the funnest, most friendly dog I've ever seen. Even though she as the coloring and fur of a lab, she's all goldie when it comes to her personallity. Golden retrievers are definetly a hassle and need constant exercise and entertainment, but they are a very loyal dog and we've never had probelms with ours running away. Our dog made friends with everyone she met and was always happy to be around new people and she never ever was aggressive toward them. She was definetly protective of my brother since the two of them basically grew up together, and I guess she sees herself as his big sister. Golden retrievers are definetly great for families with lots of kids and who have a home with a large backyard. They are definetly not ment for city appartments.

I just had the hardest time dealing with my golden retriever's death. This was because she was the best dog we ever had. She was great towards kids and was so loving. She never bit . When ever I would cry she would come over and lie next to me sometimes whimpering. Golden retrievers do not like to be yelled at or they will whimper and my daughter has already told my husband that he hurt the dogs feelings and the dog was crying. I would definitely recommend this breed for any family with energy , love, or kids!

We have an 18month old retriever. She is very placid and very friendly. We have recently become grand parents and the dog has been very good towards the baby. She lays next to her and licks here, although we would never leave her alone with the child unattended. The dog needs a lot of exercise and loves to swim whenever she can even if the water is freezing she will swim. If I were to get another dog it would have to be another golden. They are also very good guard dogs.
