From Megan, Mississippi I have a long haired Chihuahua, and he is VERY loyal to ME and some of my
family. The only problem I have with him is that he is hard headed. This type of
dog is hard to house train. Once again mine is VERY loyal!
From Chasiti, Nashville I have a long haired toy Chihuahua and she is the sweetest thing in the
world! These dogs are so loyal to there owner/owners, they are good with
children if the children do not frighten them at an early stage in the dogs
life. When I was pregnant she would not let strangers rub my belly!
From Stacey, Houston I just got a puppy Chihuahua about 5 weeks ago. This is my first experience
with this breed, but I have to say it has been a very positive learning period
for both the puppy and myself. I have found a few things helpful, and I would
like to share one important one. I have heard many people complain about the
difficulty in house training a Chihuahua. It only took mine about 2 weeks. I am
paper training her, and what I did was made her "crate" large enough
to include her "sleeping area" and a "potty area" lined with
newspaper. Since I work all day, she was forced to potty in her crate and the
only place other than her bed was the paper. When I am home I have a large play
area blocked off in the living room so that she can't roam too far out of sight.
In the play area she has a large cardboard box lined with paper. And about 90%
of the time she uses that box to potty.
From Laurie, Mesa, AZ About types of Chihuahuas: officially there are only short-hairs and
long-hairs. Though people will often talk about deer-like and apple-heads, there
is no official difference (though it's easy to see). Also, beware of
breeders that claim to have small, tiny, or teacup sized Chis. These are not
recognized sizes by the AKC and probably a sign of a bad or misinformed breeder.
All Chis "should be" 3-6 lbs according to the AKC, and all breeders
"should be" breeding to this standard. (It drives me nuts to see all
the breeders out there willing to send you their teacup deer-like Chihuahua as
airplane cargo, without even meeting you!). My little chi, Peanut, is a
deer-like chi and she's soooo cute and sweet. Really, I'm not biased. Complete
strangers come up to us and say the same thing! :)
From Chula's Mom, Louisiana People who don't own these little dogs don't know what sturdy little dogs
they are. A well-bred Chihuahua is not a skinny, yapping, shaking dog, but
a strong, active little animal who loves children and is loved by everyone they
encounter. Only by finding a breeder who truly loves these little animals
will you have what I think is the most wonderful pet you can own.
