There will have to be limits if pedigrees are
to be valid and breed records maintained. How will
the clones be identified on the pedigree? Is it
necessary to identify which clone sired which
kittens since all the clones are identical? Should
there be restrictions on the use of clones because
of inbreeding concerns? What of the problem of
premature ageing because a 2 year old clone
contains 12 year old chromosomes?
Reproductive technology is a Pandora's Box.
There are no simple solutions to the potential
impacts of these techniques, but hopefully an
awareness of the possibilities will allow cat
breeders and owners to make their decisions
wisely.
