Hamster Won't Eat A Healthy Diet

Tools: Email Bookmark Comment

My hamster absolutely loves sunflower seeds and peanuts but won't eat the rest of his feed. I buy a normal hamster mix from my pet shop. (Anna Terry - United Kingdom)

This is a common problem. The unfortunate thing about these foods is that they are good for your pet in small amounts but are very fattening and do not make a staple diet. You should not replace your hamster's food once he has finished his sunflower seeds and peanuts, even if he does not appear to eat over the following days. You know that he will eat the rest of the mix if he is really hungry.

It is likely that even if he does become accustomed to eating the other things he will always eat his favorites first. Maybe you could feed these separately as treats, away from his food bowl.
