Why Does My Cat Grind Its Teeth?

Weekly Expert Pet Advice
with Dr. James Glover, Resident Expert

My cat has recently started to grind its teeth and I'm worried that something may be wrong.  I have never noticed her doing this before but can not identify any other symptoms of illness.  (Adam Coston, UK)

Teeth grinding is often a sign of an improper bite in kittens. However, if your cat is mature and she has only just started doing this, it is certainly worth visiting the vet for a thorough oral examination. In the meantime, it may just work changing her diet from wet to dry or vice versa. Sometimes a wet diet doesn't provide enough 'bite' for a cat's gums.
