This tank leaves a lot to be desired, but most of what it lacks can be fixed with a few cheap modifications. My main and seemingly unfixable complaint is that I find it impossible to photgraph without catching my reflection, even when all other light is eliminated and the flash is off. Aside from this, the tank is designed more like a 5H than a 5 standard or even a 5L. More floor space would be desireable. Onto what needs improvement, and how you can do that: As is the lighting is minimal. At best you could possibly keep java fern alive. I reccomend upgrading the lighting to something like a Nicrew clip on light for the possibility of helping low to mid light plants live. Filter media is another headache that this tank hands you upon purchase. It comes with a carbon cartridge and a small sponge, and a ton of wasted space. The sponge that the tank comes with does not cover the intake, so if you plan to use this for a small shrimp colony or any sort of fry grow out tank, or just want a better environment for your BB, you might be interested in finding a block of biofoam and filling in the back of the tank with it. For shrimp I reccomend 1.5″ Poret® Foam Sheets (45 PPI). The 13x13 sheet with nearly fill in the whole back of the filter and will only run you about $12, then you can ditch the money sucking carbon cartidges in favour of more biomedia surface area that's completely resuable. Just be sure to clean your filter sponges only with tank water for anyone who is unaware. Lastly, you may find that even at the lowest setting the flow may be too much for more sensitive bettas (etc) I mostly solved this by taking the small triangular piece off of the output.
