The ICOM IC-22A is a crystal programmed 2 meter transceiver. Channels spacing is fixed at 15 kHz. They have no tone board in them and with the 15 khz spacing they are useless for repeater work. There are modifications available to convert them for use on Packet Radio, but packet has gone the way of the Wooly Mamoth. You can use this radio for fm simplex operation on 2 meters. The crystals are very difficult to find for these radios and they are expensive when you can find them. What all this means is, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS RADIO. A BROKEN BRICK IS MORE USEFUL. If you just MUST have one, you can pick up working examples at a Ham Fest for about $10.00. DOA examples really aren't worth taking home if someone gives you one. Instead of wasting money on this old has been junk, buy a new Baofeng. They work well on repeaters and have a one year warranty. At about $20.00 you cant go wrong with the Chinese (Baofeng) radios.Read full review

This is a great radio for a collector. I see it is chock full of crystals. It will work on VHF repeaters that exist today. You might need to retrofit a CTCSS board to generate the tone you need. I had one of these in the late 70's and it was very sensitive and clear audio. You would be buying it for the novelty of something historic and unusual. A much better bargain that those cheap Baofeng radios.

This is still a great radio. It will work with repeaters, it runs about 10 watts and has about .3 sensitivity and you can purchase new crystals, although you can still find crystals on Ebay
