I have a spare Garmin GA56 antenna mounted on the fuselage that I used to connect my 196 to and it provided much better reception than the 196's little antenna. I bought the Garmin BNC to MCX adapter cable and adapted the GA56 to my Aera 550 and reception was not as good as the 550's built in antenna. I purchased this antenna and the reception is about 50% better than the GA56 and 30% better than the 550's built in antenna. The biggest issue is unplugging the MCX connector, on the Area 500 series, it's down in a pocket and it fits so tight that you have to use a pair of needle nose pliers to grab it so you can pull it straight out and not at an angle. If you pull it at an angle, it won't come out without bending or breaking something. FYI, I tried 3 other brands of BNC to MCX adapters and none improved the reception from the GA56.Read full review

This external antenna coupled with my Garmin Aera 660 ensures rapid and positive GPS satellite reception shortly after power up. Previously i was having issues of the Garmin 660 not picking up the satellites or losing acquisition. Not anymore. Locks on, stays on until shutdown. EXACTLY what I needed for my panel mounted Garmin 660.
