The manufacturer elected to use plastic axles which become brittle over time then crack or split, causing the drive wheels to fall out of the train. Requests sent to Bachmann's customer service and parts department for resolution were replied with 'sorry too bad' messages, and they even went as far as to say if I sent them the engine and 25 bucks they would replace it with one of lesser value. Hogwash. Had the manufacturer elected to use a quality plastic that would have lasted a while then their reputation might have been salvaged, however cheap axle formulations have earned them the wrath of many HO train enthusiasts and model groups. So if you are contemplating a purchase of a Bachmann engine on Ebay first go the parts site at and verify they have spare parts for the major components of the engine, especially the mechanical parts subject to stress like the drive wheels and gears. If that are out of stock then look elsewhere, as many unhappy owners are using Ebay as a dumping ground for defective Bachmann engines. They do look good but don't be fooled - beauty is only skin deep and you want the engine to be a runner and not a broken shelf queen like the one I got.Read full review
