It does work on cleaning out all the impurities that you may POSSIBLY have. This is not saying that all the tanks has a lot of impurities, yet if there is, this filter will take care of it. You put in the charcoal, then put the filter together, and it will do the rest. If you want more charcoal, put it in and pick up a container of it at any store, or online or at your favorite pet store, but you can put in what you want, not what the manufacturer wants you to have.
