The subject matter is interesting, since the movie is based on historical events, but, unlike other reviewers, I do not think the essential here is whether the film presents Mary Surratt as being innocent when she was actually accomplice to murder or the other way around... The important question is : is the movie engaging ? And is answer is : not quite... The directing is flimsy and uninspired - take for example the dialogues between Frederick and his fiancée Sarah : the screen frames pass from him to her and vice-versa, with some unnecessary (and ugly!) close-ups occasionally, instead of encompassing both lovers in an attempt to create a sense of intimacy... The characters' movements are artificial and their only way of conveying emotion is by overacting... Alexis Bledel is thus constantly off-key due to an incessant effort at affectation, whereas James McAvoy is naturally mediocre - they make the perfect missed couple! One has nonetheless to recognize - and welcome! - the refreshing performances of Robin Wright and Kevin Kline : they literally SAVE an otherwise bombastic movie, with little to recommend it... Great in that it exposes the corrupt military judiciary in the 19th century. Also, beautiful cinematography. Unfortunately, the use of 20th century catch phrases in the mouths of 19th century persons does nothing but serve to undermine the films historicity.
