Richard W Rummell Painting STEAMSHIP COLOMBO NGI:
NAVIGAZIONE GENERALE ITALIANA LINE
Framed Painting on Canvas
by Richard W. Rummell
Up for offer is a framed painting on canvas of the steamship Colombo, done by artist Richard W. Rummell. The ship San Gennaro was built in 1915 and was transferred to the Navigazione Generale Italiana (NGI) Line in 1921. It was then renamed Colombo. The Colombo was one of the many ships that brought thousands of immigrants to North and South America.
The size of the painting is approximately 15 inches long and 11 inches wide. In the wood frame, the painting measures approximately 17.5 inches long and 13.5 inches wide. The painting probably dates to the 1920’s era. It was originally owned by an elderly lady who recently passed away. I was told the painting had been stored away since the 1950’s or 1960’s.
The canvas is supple but there are some age cracks on the surface. Please refer to the pictures, as I have circled in red the problem areas. There are also some black marks in the bottom left area, and possibly some faint age discolorations across the top and top left and right corners. Again, please refer to the pictures to ascertain the condition.
The frame is painted grey wood, and has a metal plaque at the bottom which reads “Navigazione Generale Italiana”. There are some nicks in the wood, mostly across the bottom middle and left bottom corner. On the back of the canvas it is stamped “Framed by Galindo Mfg Co Picture Frames.” The artist’s name is located in the bottom left corner.
