It is very easy till from Customers

Two things should be mentioned to future buyers. The first step involves the use of scotch tape, and 17-18 turns are all you should do to wind it up. Everything else is self-evident. Thanks.

A COMMENT ONLINE FROM SOMEONE WHO PURCHASED ONE OF THESE GRAMOPHONES:

Gakken Premium Windup Gramophone:I purchased the Gakken Premium Windup Gramophone for my sons 12th birthday. I was a little concerned as the box seemed quite small, for what I expected. On the day of my sons birthday he was very excited when he opened this present as it had been something he had really been wanting. We opened the box, and I was happy to see that despite it's small size, it was jam packed with all sorts of parts and goodies. The parts were systematically sealed in plastic bags, which made it really easy to figure out what to use in the instructions. A screwdriver was even included, so no extra tools are required! We set about creating this masterpiece. I thought it was important that he do most of the work himself, but I stayed nearby in case he needed assistance. He completed the project in just over an hour, and really didn't need help from me. This is not to say that it was too easy, but rather that the quality of the parts and the thoroughness of the instructions really made assembly a pleasure. The instructions are a little daunting at first because they are almost entirely in Japanese, but the diagrams are well laid out, listing the parts required for each step. The hardest part we ran across was the first step - the assembly of the horn. We couldn't really figure out what was going on with step one from the diagram. We knew that scotch tape was involved, but we couldn't figure out what the thick metal washer as for. We used black electrical tape for a more professional looking finish. And my son finally realized that the washer was to assist in weighing down the scotch tape when inserting it into the tube. Step one was completed!Step 3 of the horn was also a little challenging. The rivets fit quite snugly through the horn, and the screws were a little small. We found the best way to work around this was to put the rivets through the horn first, and then through the horn bell. Worked like a charm. The only other item we were unsure of was during the attachment of the chassis to the base plate. There is a funnel shaped spindle support illustrated in step 9. It shows what appear to be grommets inserted into the top and bottom holes. There were no parts that looked like this in our kit, and our spindle support looked like it already had these things built in. We ignored the diagram, and our machine still works great, so I assume that the diagram was just a reminder to make sure that your spindle support has those nibs.At the end of the project we had 4 screws (2 of each type) remaining. These were obviously extras. As fun as putting the kit together is, perhaps even more fun is trying the different ways to record and playback. My son purchased some gramophone needles, used some sewing needles, and also the bamboo and metal needle that comes with the kit. He has recorded on the white plastic discs that were included, compact discs, magazine covers, yogurt tops and plain white paper. It is interesting to see how different source materials work together. The gramophone plays regular pre-recorded records quite well. We found that 78's have the best sound quality with this machine.I have purchased lots of science kits in the past for my sons, and am usually disappointed by their lack of quality. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this kit, and more so of the excellent end product that was produced. My son really has something to be proud of, and not some wobbly piece of junk that falls apart almost as quick as it was put together.*****
