Virginia Fairy Cross - Natural Stone Cross - Staurolite For Sale - New and Used

This listing is for one fairy cross, examples are pictured above. It is a natural stone cross which is found primarily in Virginia. The crosses are found by themselves or encased in a stone, so some polishing has been done. The scientific name for the stone is "staurolite", but they have been called "fairy crosses" for many years. The legend says that when the fairies, which inhabited the beautiful forest of what is now Virginia, heard of the crucifixion of Christ, they cried and their tears formed these miniature crosses of stone. They have become a keepsake and talisman of good fortune. Several Presidents have carried these crosses as a lucky piece and Pocahontas was said to wear a necklace made of them. The size may vary from 1/2" x 1/2" to 5/8" x 7/8". They are found in both Maltese and Roman cross styles. Each cross comes with a mounted jump ring so it can be worn on a chain or put on a key ring or elsewhere. You may specify if you want a light or dark colored cross (see examples above) We also often have small ones that measure 6/8" x 6/8" if you like. The price is for one cross and each cross is unique and may have natural flaws. A story about the fairy cross is included with each cross.
