1948 RCA AM TUBE RADIO - MODEL 8-BX-5
I purchased this RCA at a radio show with the intent of restoring it. My interests have changed and so I an passing it on. It is being sold for parts or restoration. It's an excellent restoration candidate. It is very clean overall and it does power on (using a variac) but has weak intermittent reception . The exterior faux snakeskin cover is in nice condition, just needs cleaning. The handle is complete and intact. Both sides and the bottom are in good shape. The label is in excellent condition. The rear door hinges are present but not attached to the door. Please see the close-up photos. The points on the door where they would attach are cracked and material is missing. This is repairable (on-line sources state the case is plastic, though I would have guessed it's bakelite). That is the one significant exterior repair that is needed. The top of the rear door is attached by wire-like string with brass balls that clip to the door and are in good shape. There is a small missing piece at the top of the left hand where the brass ball slides in. It too can be repaired. Beyond that, the little button on the tuning knob on the front is missing. The AC power cord appears to be original but has two places with black electrical tape-you'll want to replace it. The chassis is very clean and the radio does power up but has very weak reception. It will need attention. I expected to re-cap and test tubes, clean the controls at a minimum. I fully intended to fix this up and keep it as part of my collection. I think it's too good for a parts radio. As I said above, I've got other projects of more interest to me now.
