vintage pair EMINENCE Alnico magnet 12\" woofers with new foam surrounds, 4Ω—1973:
$99.95

Offered for your consideration is a pair of EMINENCE 12 inch Alnico magnet woofers. As per the EIA source/date code paint-stamped on themagnet covers, “67 7303”, these woofers were made by EMINENCE (67) in the 3rd week of 1973. Best known todayfor their guitar amplifierspeakers,EMINENCEdriverswere used in many quality brands in the late 1960’s-1980’s (most notablyKlipsch) and these woofers wereremoved from a pair ofQuadraflex Model 66 three-way speakers.

So, please take a look at the large photos I’ve taken and read the remaining description to decide if these capable woofers are suitable for your needs.

These woofers are in clean, excellent condition. They have structurally perfect sturdy textured paper cones with just some discoloration—sun-faded, not stained—and flawless large textile voice coil dustcaps. Plus, the black-enameled steelbaskets are in great shape with no dings, just a littleoxidation (mainly on one), and some remnants of black mounting putty atthe rear of the flanges. Most importantly, the aged original factory foam surrounds were just replaced.

Most U.S. speaker companies used foam for their woofer surrounds from the early 1970’s to 1990’s. Foam offers superior excursion to coated linen and rubber surrounds, but invariably rots and falls apart in 12-20 years no matter what climate you live in. These woofers were no exception since the surrounds were dried out and badly cracked with pieces missing. As I’m sure you know, proper cone suspension is very important; if you play woofers with faulty surrounds for too long they’ll start to rub the voice coils and ruin them in a short time.

Some of you have replaced woofer surrounds before, so you know it’s a time-consuming process that takes a great deal of patience and a steady hand. These woofers came from EMINENCE without flange gaskets, so that eliminated a step.First, I carefully cleaned the cones’ edges and basket flanges to remove the old gummy foam and stubborn factory adhesives, which takes some time to do correctly. Next, I glued the inner surround lips to the cones’ edge. Lastly, I glued the outer surround lips to the basket flanges after verifying no coil rub. I allowed overnight drying of the acrylic glue between each of the steps to achieve the perfect results you see here. Now these woofers are in great shape once again—perhaps even better than new with the modern polyether foam surrounds!

These woofers were fully tested after thesurrounds were refurbished and they sound perfect—strong and clear with detailedlower midrange and solid bass response. Plus, they havethe Alnico magnet warmth of tone sought after by those thatknow. And, I tested their DC resistance at a closely-matched 3.5 and 3.6Ω, respectively, consistent with a nominal 4 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the baskets measure 12¼” diameter, they stand 5½” tall, and the four-corner mounting hole pattern is 8¼” adjacent / 11¾” diagonal apart, c-t-c (the standard size found on practically all U.S.-made 12” speakers).

This is a great findif your Quadraflex 66\'s, or other suitablebrand/model from the era, are sitting idle with decayed surround 12\" woofersand will have yourspeakerssounding their best again! Thesespeakersmayalso be a good retrofitfor some vintage guitar amps, but you\'ll have to make that assessment based on your needs.

So, as pictured and described, this pair of EMINENCE 12” Alnico magnet woofers with painstakingly restored surrounds is offered at a competitive price.
