VINTAGE CONRAD JOHNSON MV75A-1 VACUUM TUBE POWER AMPLIFIER
I bought this item on earlier this year. Subsequently, without doing any more than powering the unit up, I decided that it would suit me better to have a current model in my audio system. What follows is from the previous seller\'s description (with slight changes):
\"AMAZING SOUND EVEN BY TODAY\'S STANDARDS ! THIS VINTAGE UPGRADED \'CONRAD JOHNSON MV75A-1 VACUUM TUBE POWER AMPLIFIER\' IS IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION ! THIS CONRAD JOHNSON MV75A-1 VACUUM TUBE POWER AMPLIFIER HAS JUST BEEN CLEANED, SERVICED , POWER CABLE UPGRADED , BIASED , AND TESTED ! A-1 WORKING CONDITION ! COSMETICALLY STUNNING ! SLIGHT BLEMISH ON LEFT SIDE FACE PLATE , ONLY NOTICEABLE IF YOUR LOOKING FOR IT , SHOWN IN PICTURE ! \'AMAZING CONRAD JOHNSON CLASSIC SOUND STAGE\' !\"
Since I never hooked the unit up in my system, I cannot attest to the sound. However, conrad-johnson has a long-standing, well-earned reputation, & I believe that the MV75A-1 is a much sought after vintage tube amplifier. There is an additional \"blemish\" besides the one mentioned: a corner of one of the projecting separators on the left output panel is broken off. This is not visible in the photo. Also, I feel obliged to mention that the upgraded power cable is only 4 feet long, which I found to be too short for my setup. Additionally, the power on LED indicator that is shown as glowing in the previous seller\'s photo no longer does so. The 6550 tubes that were included, one of which was broken, appeared of a generic kind that did not impress me. I have replaced them with cryogenically treated, audiophile grade Tung-Sol tubes (see below). (NOTE: the attached photos are my own, not the previous seller\'s.)
What follows is taken from the conrad-johnson vintage products website:
\"conrad-johnson MV75 Vacuum Tube Power Amplifier
(introduced in 1979)
\"An immediate success, and widely acclaimed as a state-of-the-art contender, this power amplifier strongly signaled that conrad-johnson was indeed a serious company. Like the PV1, the MV75 employed metal film resistors and mylar capacitors throughout the circuitry.
\"The MV75 broke new ground in tube amplifier design by featuring a built in bias indicator circuit to simplify bias adjustment for the tube output stage-a task that must be performed whenever output tubes are changed, and periodically as they age. Earlier tube amplifiers required additional test equipment and technical expertise to set the bias for the output stage-a daunting task for many owners. The MV75 included a built in LED bias indicator for each output tube requiring only a screwdriver to accurately set the bias. This arrangement made it a simple matter for owners to keep their amplifiers operating at peak performance. All subsequent conrad-johnson tube amplifiers have included this built in bias indicator.
\"The MV75A upgrade added high-voltage fuses to protect the amplifier from shorted output tubes and upgraded the mylar capacitors to polypropylene. The MV75A-1 upgrade included circuit revisions to reduce the impedance of the regulated power supplies for the voltage amplifier and inverter stages.\"
