This highly stylised wooden gope board comes from the Papuan Gulf of New Guinea and was collected there in the 1960-70's by a forestry worker. The board depicts anancestral face with amedialridge runningthe middle of the upper half. It represents a spirit and has offers protection from disease and evil for its owners and is carved from hardwood and decorated with pigments that are in great condition fortheir age but have suffered some loss.
