Unusual ANTIQUE 1600's Finely Painted Portrait Miniature of Prince Henry Stuart
Offered for sale is this fine quality, interesting and unusual, 1600's, finely painted portrait miniature of Henry Stuart, 1st Duke of Gloucester {1640-1660}. Wearing suit of armour, white lace jabot and blue sash of the Order of the Garter, his natural hair worn loose. Watercolour on vellum, later inscribed on the reverse Henry Duke of Gloucester son of King Charles First. Brass or similar frame, the reverse engraved with ' Prince Henry Stuart Duke of Gloucester K.G. Born at Oatlands 8th July 1640 Died at Whitehall 13 Sepr 1661 by Alexander Cooper'.
The miniature is oval, measuring 3 inches by 2 & 1/4 inches approx. Not including the frame.
The portrait derives from a portrait by Johann Boeckhorst, of which there is a version in the National Portrait Gallery and in the Royal Collection.
Henry was the youngest son of Charles I and Henrietta Maria. After his father's defeat at the end of the English Civil War, the prince was captured and brought to London. As Henry was considered to be sufficiently young to have not yet been "corrupted" by the Catholic and absolutist views of his parents, it was briefly suggested that the young prince might be placed on the throne, as a constitutional monarch. However, Parliament opted instead for the establishment of a Republican Commonwealth. In 1652, Oliver Cromwell agreed to release Henry, and he joined his mother and brothers in Paris. However, Henry had become a staunch Protestant, and quarrelled bitterly with his mother over religion and politics. Henrietta virtually expelled him from Paris, and he went to join the Spanish armies fighting at Dunkirk. After the collapse of the Commonwealth, he was reunited with his brother Charles, by whom he was created Duke of Gloucester and Earl of Cambridge . He returned to England and took up residence in Whitehall, but died suddenly of smallpox.Please see the photos for condition. The portrait is in good used antique order, there are some areas of paint loss, mainly to the edges and a small spot to the jacket collar above the lace. Also a little dirty in places, but considering its age, overall good order. An interesting and unusual early miniature. One of several good quality miniatures being listed this week.
