Teapot from Coimbra, PORTUGAL // hand-painted ceramic pottery:
$80.00

This beautiful, hand-painted teapot was created in a small, family-owned factory in Coimbra, Portugal by painters who are committed to keeping the original painted ceramic traditions of Coimbra alive. Each piece is a unique creation from Ceramicas de Iva, signed by the painter, and no two pieces are alike! The style of painting represents the 17th century design that has made Coimbra ceramics famous. This piece features a peacock, a rabbit, an exotic bird, and a dog. It also includes an intricate leaf design on the handle and a feather pattern on the spout as well. Ancient written documents have shown the "National Ceramic" production has existed in the Coimbra area since the year 1145 . Documents also show approval and regulation since the 16th century of "malegueiros", or artisans, who fired the ceramic pieces twice. The first firing was to obtain the raw white clay pottery piece and the second firing was after the decorative painting had been applied. Portuguese sailors from the Age of Discoveries brought back beautiful faience pieces China which had a great impact on the artisans. The faience painted in this region is unique to Portugal and represents the Oriental tradition, as well as Arabian influence. In the last century, ceramic societies decided to reproduce 17th century faience pieces that had been exhibited in museums and private collections of the city. Just outside of the city of Coimbra are the Roman ruins, Conimbriga. These ruins were also a source of artistic inspiration for the ceramics produced. These artisans still possess the ancient knowledge to produce the original colors, such as sepia and blue by using ancient substances. The motifs of the Coimbra faience portray hunting scenes, castles, coats of arms, feathers and plumage of exotic birds, outlines of Arabian-influenced backgrounds, and many more. All of them have such a peculiar effect that they give the faience a typical feature impossible to be mistaken or confused with any other faience. The decoration is entirely handmade, signed and dated by the artisan, making each piece exclusive and unique.  The teapot, from handle to spout measures 10 inches wide by 6.5 inches high.  The piece is new, has never been used, and holds about 5 cups (about 1.25 liters) of liquid. This could be a thoughtful, creative Christmas, wedding, or birthday gift for a friend or family member, or a housewarming gift to welcome someone into a new home! Matching tea cups and saucers available upon request! Item ships with registered mail, and combined shipping is available by contacting seller.
