Rare 19th Century Japan Takagiri Falcon 4 Panel Byobu Folding Screen

From the prestigious Cole Collection, Honolulu - NR

  • Measurements:
    • Total, unfolded 81"
    • Height 47 5/8"
  • Edges are lacquered wood with decorative brass accents
  • 4 panel decorative screen or byobu which literally means “wind wall”
  • Featured on each panel is a traditional Japanese style painting on paper mounted on elegant brocade
  • Tethered falcon subjects, incredible attention to detail, note the fine plummage and the fierce eyes
  • Most likely dates to theMeiji Reign of 1868 to 1912 when these exquisite birds were trained for the great sport of falconry
  • Pair of wall mounting brackets are included
  • Hole at the back doesn't go all the way through and does not affect the painting in anyway and is mentioned only for the sake of accuracy
  • Characteristic wear from age such as toning especially at the top of the second panel, see photo
  • Recently acquired from the estate of a notable Hawaii collector of art and antiquities of which many objects are now housed in the Honolulu Art Museum
