AMERICAN DESTROYER ESCORT

Good Project for Beginners

Designed by GlynnGuest

DURING the SecondWorld War the United States undertook a massive shipbuildingprogramme to supply both her allies and own needs. Ships of all types, merchantand warships, were virtually mass‑produced in a manner the likes of which wemay never see again. Since speed of construction was of paramount importancethese designs were standardized as far as possible. Vessels produced underthese conditions generally had a simple straightforward appearance unlike theoften fussy and complex con temporary foreign designs. Such functionalism maynot appeal to all eyes but they can form the basis of easily built models thatstill capture the character of the full size vessels.

The Hibbard,a fictitious name I confess, is based upon the Rudderow classof Destroyer Escorts. They were modifications of the previous Buckley classin which the 3in.guns were replaced with two 5in. guns in single mounts. Thisarmament combined with three torpedo tubes gave them the appearance and punchof a bantam destroyer. In 1945 some vessels had the AA removed and replaced withsix extra 40mm AA guns; this model represents such a modification.

Numerousunits of this class were converted to fast transports (APD designation in theUS Navy) whilst building. They would carry landing craft on large davits tomeet the supply needs of the Pacific 'Island Hopping' campaign. Others hadlarge radars installed for duties as fleet radar pickets, the first line ofdefence against air attack. So, if you fancy something a little different thenthis design offers plenty of scope for individual tastes.
