RARE 18th-19th C. INDIAN WOOTZ DAMASCUS SHAMSHIR SWORD WITH GOLD INLAID MARK:
$1,525

I purchased this sword recently, just because I thought it was kind of cool looking. It is a very interesting sword, but lack of wall space, a decision to focus on main passion of collecting Napoleonic cavalry sabres, and wife's urging to reduce the antique sword collection (although this was one she wants me to keep) made me decide to sell several swords, including this one.

Here is the original description from the previous seller:

Beautiful and rare Indian shamshir saber most likely to date from the 1700s period, wearing a very strong and sturdy single edged blade with flamboyant edge and spine, exhibiting nice light gray patina and very fine watered patterns throughout, one side with a large cartouche inlaid with gold and exceptionally well preserved. Beautiful chiseled brass hilt terminating in a peacock head pommel, retaining most of its original gold gilding and is completely intact and solid with the blade. Fabulous sword in battle ready condition, comes with a later leather over wood scabbard.overall 36" blade 28".

I had several conversations with the previous seller. He has a 100% rating. This sword seems genuine, but I'm not an expert in this period. The scabbard is quite recent. It acts only as protection for the blade (or for other people, as the blade is very sharp! Wootz swords were renowned for their sharpness). Knowledge of wootz manufacturing died out in India around 1750, I would guess this sword comes from that era, or fairly shortly before it.
